A Record Year for Relocation
Over 3,000 Swedes are expected to relocate to Spain in 2025, setting a new record. This figure, reported by SCB (Statistics Sweden), has more than doubled since 2011. The move is powered by the promise of sunshine, affordability, and a better quality of life.
Not Just Retirees Anymore
Interestingly, it’s not just retirees leading this wave. Younger Swedes and families are increasingly choosing to start a new life in Spain. Top destinations include the Costa del Sol, especially Marbella, Malaga, and Torrevieja.
In Marbella, the Nueva Andalucía area has even earned the nickname “Little Stockholm” due to its large and vibrant Swedish population.
From Holidaymakers to Homeowners
Events like Köpa Hus Utomlands are now attracting a broader audience, from business owners to digital nomads. A growing number of Swedes are purchasing homes and even starting companies in Spain—just like Fredrik Ottosson and Anna Axelsson on the Costa Blanca.
Why Spain?
Sweden’s colder climate, higher taxes, and rising costs are pushing more people to look south. Spain offers:
-
A healthier outdoor lifestyle
-
Lower value-added tax (VAT)
-
More favorable corporate tax policies
-
Access to Swedish schools and communities
For many, it’s time to “släpp sargen”—a Swedish phrase meaning to stop hesitating—and embrace a brighter, sunnier future abroad.
